Cupping and Gua Sha
These adjunctive modalities can be very helpful in releasing areas of chronic tension, especially on the upper back, neck and shoulders. As such, they can be an important part of a larger systemic process of energetic and physical detoxification.
Cupping involves a specially constructed glass cup. A flame is lit underneath the cup to create a vacuum, then the cup is quickly placed on the surface of the skin (lubricated with medicinal oil). As the practitioner gently slides the cup along the muscles, the light suction draws out toxin from the blood layer of the body, while creating a very soothing sensation. This technique is a perennial favorite of pediatric patients, but can be used for all ages! The art of Gua Sha involves using a rounded ceramic tool to similarly pull out toxin and release "wind" (pain) from the blood level and sinews. Though perhaps less soothing than cupping per se, it is highly effective in cases of severe tension and holding. |
